7 Tips to Safely Relocate Your Home Gym Equipment

If you’ve been thinking about moving to another state and taking your home gym equipment with you, then you’ve got some tips to learn. Handling heavy equipment isn’t simple and it might even cause some damage if not handled properly. This applies to all equipment, even if it’s just a yoga mat and dumbbells. 

Read on to find out how to successfully move your home gym to another state.

1. Clean Everything You Pack, Including Gym Equipment

Make sure that your home gym is clean and disinfected

If you decided to do the packing by yourself, you’re probably already cleaning everything before placing it into boxes. The same should apply to the home gym equipment. Use a disinfectant wipe to sanitize everything, from handrails to other less frequently touched parts of the item. You can also use paper towels and an antibacterial spray. This way, you’ll know you’re not bringing any germs and bacteria to your new house.

2. Start With the Lighter Things

Whenever there are some big and heavy items to be carried, start with lighter ones. They take up less space and usually take less time to pack and protect. Once your yoga mats are all clean and dry, roll them up and pack them with the rest of the yoga accessories. This also applies to fitness accessories. Put all small items together in a plastic bag, and protect the mat as well. This should all fit inside of a medium-sized box. Fill all the extra space left in the package with crumpled paper or bubble wrap before taping it shut. After that, label the box and you’re good to go.

Other pieces of equipment aren’t as easy to handle as yoga and fitness equipment. You can even get hurt if you carry something too heavy by yourself. It would be best to hire a professional long-distance moving company that can do all of this for you. Their movers are trained and experienced in handling all kinds of household objects, so this won’t be a problem. They’ll be using high-end packing supplies meant just for heavy things such as a stationary bike or the smith machine.

When transporting small but heavy items, use many small cardboard boxes instead of a few big ones. If the bottom of the cardboard box isn’t sturdy enough to keep the weight, get plastic bins instead. Wrap the weights in bubble wrap, place them in boxes, and fill the empty space with crumpled paper.

5. A Stationary Bike Is One of the Most Common Pieces

This piece isn’t that complicated at all. The only thing you need to do is to get moving blankets and protect the floors. Once you unplug it, secure the cords in a bag or even a jar so that they don’t mix with other cords. Cover the bike with blankets, tape it down, and take it to the truck. Once you load it inside, secure it so it doesn’t move during the trip.

If you’re still adamant about doing this alone, make sure you find the manual and check how heavy it is and how you can handle it. Needless to mention, no matter the weight, you will require a furniture dolly to move your treadmill. Follow the next steps:

  • Unplug the treadmill from the outlet,
  • Find the info in the manual about how to fold the treadmill and if there is a locking mechanism,
  • Once it’s folded, wrap it in moving blankets and tape it so that it doesn’t unwrap.

This machine can’t be simply folded and wrapped – it takes some disassembling to move this piece without damaging your other belongings. Because of its weight and awkward shape, you will have to take it apart before putting it inside of a moving truck. Try using these steps:

  • Get the manual and see how it should be disassembled,
  • Unplug the machine,
  • Get screwdrivers and wrenches,
  • Take apart the elliptical – remove the base, pedals, handlebars, and the main console,
  • Wrap each piece in blankets and tape it.

When disassembled this way, the machine will be easy to handle and carry to the moving truck. If you don’t want to take off the parts, you can carry it whole, but make sure it’s well covered so that it doesn’t scratch or damage other items. Two to three people will be enough to carry it.

All in all, moving gym equipment on your own is not an impossible task, but it is a difficult and potentially dangerous one. So instead of running the risk of damaging your expensive gear or injuring yourself, consider hiring professional help to assist you throughout the entire process. As soon as you do that, continue with your regular fitness routine to give yourself the energy boost you deserve.
